Microneedling

1. In a nutshell what is microneedling?

Microneedling is a restorative, anti-ageing facial treatment to boost the natural appearance of your skin.

Microneedling is used to correct the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, acne and uneven skin tone.

Microneedling increases the production of new collagen, by injuring the skin to create a more youthful appearance.

2. Am I suitable for microneedling?

Microneedling is a suitable treatment for patients concerned about their fine lines, wrinkles and facial folds.

Patients who have scarring are also great candidates for microneedling, the collagen that will be produced after microneedling will greatly reduce the appearance of scars.

Microneedling is also a great option for patients who wish to boost their skin radiance and correct uneven skin tone. Microneedling produces younger, fresher and smoother skin.

Patients not suitable for microneedling are: women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with diabetes, patients prone to scarring, patients with facial warts, infections and patients taking blood thinning medication.

3. How is treatment carried out?

At Dental & Skin our doctor will first assess your skin to make sure you are a good candidate for microneedling.

We will then remove all make-up and apply a numbing cream to the whole face to make sure patients have a pain free experience. The numbing cream will be left on for around the time of 5 minutes.

The next step is to begin the treatment by applying and rolling the dermapen onto the target areas. We can adjust the size of the needles to suit the patient’s skin and comfortability.

The dermapen will be rolled over the face, creating tiny injuries to the top layer of the skin. This will boost the collagen underneath to produce new and fresher skin.
Once treatment has been completed, we will massage the treated area with aloe vera.

4. Will I feel any pain?

At Dental & Skin, we find that most patients do not have a painful experience with microneedling treatment.

We prioritise patient comfort with the use of numbing cream.

5. How will I look after my microneedling treatment?

After treatment the patient’s skin we will be red in similar appearance to mild sunburn. After 24 hours this will have gone down significantly and in a few days all redness will have disappeared.

Patients will also experience a tightness and the skin may be sensitive to touch.

6. When will I see the results?

Patients will notice results just a few days after treatment, skin will feel tighter and smoother.

For full results to take effect, this can take several weeks and results will continue to improve in the following months to a year.

7. How many treatments are recommended?

For best results its recommended to have microneedling treatment repeated every 4 consecutive weeks, 3 or 4 times a year.

8. Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is a safe procedure and there are no long term complications associated with microneedling.

Due to microneedling being a non-invasive procedure, patients experience little down time.

The injuries to the skin that are created by the needle do not cause bruising or swelling, as they heal within 24 hours.

Patients are highly unlikely to experience any allergic reactions from microneedling as the treatment does not involve the injection of any substances.

9. Dermaroller vs Dermapen

Dermaroller is a small handheld roller with rows of microneedles on the surface. Dermapen is a pen like device containing an electrical motor that moves a bank of microneedles in and out.

A Dermaroller is rolled onto the skin in all directions, horizontally and vertically. The Dermapen, however, is a vertical motion only.

This vertical motion means that the Dermapen will not create any tears in the skin, unlike the Dermaroller, which has this risk due to the different angles it can come into contact with the skin.

With the Dermapen, your doctor can target the hard to reach areas such as the nose and skin around the lips much more easily, whilst ensuring that the needles do not bend.

Patients who have experienced both Dermapen and Dermaroller much prefer the Dermapen in terms of comfortability during treatment and results (especially the reducing of scarring).

10. Home microneedling vs In Chair

Microneedling carried out by a trained professional, in a clinic, is much more effective and safe.

This is due to that the size of the needles used by your doctor are larger than needles for home use. They penetrate the skin deeper, do not bend and produce greater results. This is especially true for patients who wish to reduce scarring, marks and uneven skin tone.

If patients carry out microneedling treatment at home, they have to be very careful to maintain the cleanliness of the needles. If needles are not properly maintained this can cause damage to your skin.

Patients who are prone to pain and sensitivity, we advise to carry out microneedling professionally. This is so numbing cream can be applied, and your doctor can monitor your skin.

11. After Treatment Care

After your microneedling treatment, we advise all patients to use sunscreen, to protect and hydrate your skin. Patients should also stay out of direct sunlight for a few weeks.

Patients should not exfoliate their skin for at least a week after microneedling treatment.

12. Microneedling with plasma

This treatment involves drawing a syringe of blood from the patient, separating the plasma from the blood in a centrifuge and rolling the PRP onto the treatment area with microneedling.

Microneedling allows the plasma to enter the skin much more deeply.

Microneedling with plasma has the advantage of increasing the results that microneedling achieves on its own. It does this by producing tighter, smoother skin in a quicker time frame.

Advantages

Plasma produces all the great results from microneedling, whilst increasing them.

The blood used comes from the patient themselves, therefore, there is no risk of infection.

The treatment like microneedling, is not painful and numbing cream will be applied.

Plasma increases the healing process from microneedling.

Disadvantages

Microneedling with plasma does have some side effects; including bruising and inflammation.

Microneedling with plasma can not be done at home.
