Invisalign
1. In a nutshell what is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a clear brace designed to move your teeth to their desired position by a constant small force being applied to your teeth.
Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, allowing patients to go about their day to day social activities with comfort and confidence.
Invisalign aligners need to be worn 22 hours a day however, they are removable. This means patients can take them out to eat and drink, or for a special occasion with ease.
Invisalign aligners are made from a thin thermoplastic resin, and are custom made to fit your mouth and gum line perfectly.
2. Who is suitable for Invisalign?
Patients best suited to Invisalign braces are those with mild to moderate orthodontic cases.
Invisalign is best suited to correct cases of: crooked teeth, overbites, crossbites, crowded teeth and over spaced teeth.
At Dental & Skin we offer free consultations for braces, pop by our London clinic for your consultation.
3. What are the different types of Invisalign?
There are three different types of Invisalign and we offer all three here at Dental & Skin.
Invisalign Full: This type of Invisalign is the longest, with treatment completed within 18-24 months. Invisalign Full is ideal for patients who need major orthodontic work and for more complex cases.
Invisalign Lite: This type of Invisalign is for patients who require less complex, minor treatment on their front 6 teeth. Treatment is completed within 6 months.
Invisalign i7: This type of Invisalign also works on the front 6 teeth and treatment can be completed within 3 months.
4. What is the treatment process for Invisalign?
In your first appointment at Dental & Skin in a braces consultation, we will carry out a dental exam with x-rays to make a diagnosis.
In your second appointment we will take impressions of your teeth and gums which will be sent to Invisalign where your customised aligners will be made.
Once the aligners have arrived back to us, we will book you in for your next appointment to fit your first set aligners and give you some more sets.
Your aligners will need to be changed every 2 weeks. We give you sets to last up to 8 weeks where we will book you in for your next appointment.
5. What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional metal braces; Invisalign is less painful, requires less dental visits and has the benefit of appearance.
The greatest advantage of Invisalign aligners is that they are almost invisible. Most patients agree that their peers don’t notice that they are wearing them and feel confident during social activities.
There are no brackets or wires within the mouth, this means there is no risk of an allergic reaction with Invisalign.
Patients also don’t have to visit their dentist as often for adjustments as you would with traditional braces.
Invisalign aligners are made to fit perfectly over your teeth, this means patients are less likely to experience irritation unlike with metal braces.
Invisalign treatment is carefully planned step by step with its new technology. This means we can predict when your treatment will be finished.
Invisalign allows patients to maintain optimum oral hygiene. The aligners being removable allows patients to continue to brush and floss effectively.
6. What are the possible risks of Invisalign?
Braces require a substantial amount of the patient’s and dentist’s’ time. The overall success of your treatment will depend upon your cooperation. This involves attending appointments, maintaining oral hygiene, and wearing your aligners for the 22 hours a day to achieve excellent orthodontic results.
When having braces your teeth and gums are at more risk of gum disease. At Dental & Skin we will give you advice on how to maintain your oral health whilst wearing your aligners.
At first you may experience some discomfort with your aligners, it will require dedication and perseverance to get used to your aligners for the first week or so.
After your treatment with Invisalign is completed, retainers are often necessary to maintain the results. This requires dedication from patients and it is important to ask yourself if you can commit to the treatment financially.
7. Will I experience any pain with Invisalign?
Patients who wear Invisalign aligners are less likely to experience pain than patients wearing metal braces.
Invisalign aligners are customised to fit securely onto your teeth with no sharp edges to irritate your gums or cheeks.
Patients may experience slight discomfort whilst getting used to your aligners, however this discomfort is temporary and not likely to be painful.
8. Post-Treatment Care
After you have finished your Invisalign treatment it is important to book for a dental exam to check for any tooth decay or cavities.
At Dental & Skin we will provide you with an oral health care routine to maintain the results of your newly straight teeth.
After treatment most patients will need a retainer to maintain their results. Once you have finished wearing your aligners, it is important to book in to have your retainers custom made.
Similarly, to Invisalign it is key that patients wear their retainers for the time period required to maintain their results.
9. Who can carry out Invisalign treatment?
Invisalign treatment can only be carried out by a trained practitioner who has completed all Invisalign training required to carry out treatment.
