Acne Treatment

1. In a nutshell what is acne?

Acne is a common, non contagious condition that causes spots that can affect the face, chest, back and shoulders.

Acne is most common for teenagers around the ages of 14-19 due to hormone changes however, adults can also be affected by acne later in life.

Acne occurs when the skin follicles are blocked by dead skin cells and an oil called sebum. This can lead to spots forming on the skin as well as blackheads and whiteheads.

2. Are there different types of spots?

Acne is often characterised by 6 different types of spots: blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.

These spots can be characterised into two different categories: inflamed and non-inflamed spots.

Non-inflamed spots are blackheads or whiteheads. Inflamed spots are red bumps, pus-filled spots and cysts.

There are also different types of acne: Mild acne is where a patient has non-inflamed spots. Moderate acne is where a patient has both inflamed and non-inflamed spots which could leave scars. Severe acne is where patients have inflamed spots and cysts and will leave scars.

3. Which factors cause acne?

Acne can be caused by hormonal changes experienced as a teenager, for example the production of testosterone.

Patients are more likely to experience acne if both parents had or have acne.

Acne can also be caused by some medications, for example; medicines for epilepsy and medications for depression.

If a patient is experiencing acne it would be beneficial to avoid wearing make up.

Acne is not caused by bad hygiene, washing and scrubbing at your acne will not help instead it could irritate it.

4. How should I wash acne prone skin?

Skin should be washed no more than twice a day and with non-perfumed materials and soaps.

Tips to help your acne

Don’t wash your face more than twice a day and use non-perfumed soaps
Always use warm water
Avoid squeezing your spots
Always remove your makeup before bed and if possible avoid wearing it too often
Regularly wash your hair
Use non-perfumed moisturisers to avoid dry skin
When you exercise have a shower as soon as you can to remove any sweat

5. Which other treatments are available?

At Dental & Skin we offer many different skin treatments to help improve acne.

Microneedling, microdermabrasion and chemical peels can all help. However, microneedling should not be used on active acne.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive, chemical free, non surgical skin rejuvenation treatment.

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical skin exfoliation treatment which uses medical grade crystals to remove the top layer of the skin.

Our skin interprets this as an injury and instantly begins producing a new, refreshed layer of skin.

A diamond tip applicator is used to apply the crystals and a vacuum is used to clear them away, revealing a fresher, rejuvenated complexion.

One of the main benefits of microdermabrasion is that it is not invasive and no chemicals are used. It simply rejuvenates your skin by exfoliation.

Microdermabrasion stimulates the body’s blood flow, improving your circulation and subsequently delivering more nutrients and oxygen. This helps with improving the skin’s appearance and elasticity.

Microdermabrasion increases the absorption of other products into your skin. This is particularly useful for patients who are applying topical acne cream.

Microdermabrasion helps to unclog pores and reduce their size.

Microdermabrasion does not have any recovery time and is one of the safest procedures for rejuvenating your skin.

Treatment time is 30 minutes, this enables patients to return to their daily activities quickly.
