Acne Scar Treatment
1. In a nutshell what is acne?
Acne is a common, not contagious condition that causes spots that can affect the face, chest, back and shoulders.
Acne is most common for teenagers around the ages of 14-19 due to hormone changes however, adults can also be affected by acne later in life.
Acne occurs when the skin follicles are blocked by dead skin cells and an oil called sebum. This can lead to spots forming on the skin as well as blackheads and whiteheads.
2. Why does acne scar?
Unfortunately, scars are a common side effect of acne. Scars are formed when spot breakouts damage the tissue underneath the skin.
Acne scarring is most common with spots such as cysts and nodules which damage the skin when they burst however, all types of acne spots have the possibility of leaving behind scars.
It is important to avoid picking and squeezing acne spots as this will greatly reduce the chance of scarring.
3. Are there different types of acne scars?
Yes, there are three most common types of acne scars.
Ice pick scars: These small, v-shaped scars can resemble round chicken pox scars. They extend deep into the skin, making them the most difficult scar to treat.
Rolling Scars: This type of scar forms under the skin, creating an uneven, rolling appearance with round edges.
Boxcar Scars: This type of scar can be shallow or deep with a round, oval or U shaped appearance.
Acne scars can create an emotional, social and psychological impact on patients. If you are concerned about the appearance of your acne scars, visit our Islington clinic to discuss which treatment could help you.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive, chemical free, non surgical skin rejuvenation treatment.
Microdermabrasion is a mechanical skin exfoliation treatment which uses medical grade crystals to remove the top layer of the skin.
Our skin interprets this as an injury and instantly begins producing a new, refreshed layer of skin.
A diamond tip applicator is used to apply the crystals and a vacuum is used to clear them away, revealing a fresher, rejuvenated complexion.
One of the main benefits of microdermabrasion is that it is not invasive and no chemicals are used. It simply rejuvenates your skin by exfoliation.
Microdermabrasion stimulates the body’s blood flow, improving your circulation and subsequently delivering more nutrients and oxygen. This helps with improving the skin’s appearance and elasticity.
Microdermabrasion increases the absorption of other products into your skin. This is particularly useful for patients who are applying topical acne cream.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a restorative, anti-ageing facial treatment to boost the natural appearance of your skin.
Microneedling is used to correct the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, acne and uneven skin tone.
Microneedling increases the production of new collagen, by injuring the skin to create a more youthful appearance.
Microneedling is a suitable treatment for patients concerned about their fine lines, wrinkles and facial folds.
Patients who have scarring are also great candidates for microneedling, the collagen that will be produced after microneedling will greatly reduce the appearance of scars.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are an anti-ageing, aesthetic treatment which revitalise your skin. Dermal fillers create volume, and boost your natural shape whilst reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
They work by plumping up the skin to produce volume and `fill out’ lines and wrinkles.
Dermal fillers consist of a substance called hyaluronic acid; a non-harmful substance natural to the human body. The hyaluronic acid is chemically altered to produce a gel which creates the filler.
Dermal fillers can be used to even out the appearance of your skin by filling in the acne scars. Dermal fillers are best suited to patients who have rolling or boxcar acne scars.
